Two Solar Powered Trash & Recycling Stations for Downtown

Harrisburg, PA – The Harrisburg Downtown Improvement District has purchased and installed two solar-powered trash & recycling stations in the downtown business district. The stations, manufactured by BigBelly, are the first of their kind to appear in Harrisburg. One station is located at the corner of Locust and 2nd Streets. The second is on Market Street near Harrisburg University and Strawberry Square.

The stations use energy from solar panels to compact garbage when the bins get too full, reducing overflow and the frequency with which they need to be emptied. They include software that alerts the Downtown Improvement District and the City as to when each unit is empty, nearly full, or full.

“We are continually exploring new ways to improve the quality of services we provide to the downtown businesses. We are excited to be able to offer this new technology and look forward to expanding this program in the future,” said Todd Vander Woude, Executive Director of Harrisburg Downtown Improvement District.
